Professor McMurray proposed the following: “This summer, I’m teaching a graduate class called “Rhetorics of Decline and Collapse.” The course is capped at 10 students. The focus will be on contemporary discourses of ecological and social distress, particularly concepts of overpopulation and overdevelopment, which are frequently “taboo” subjects that nevertheless go to the heart of our planetary dilemma. Effective visual representations of the issues–e.g., film, photography, new media–are going to be a focus. I’d like the class to have this book as a case study in powerful communication. The words, visuals, and production values model best practices in environmental communication. The students are going to develop media projects that will explore the focal issues announced in the title of this book. My goal is for the projects to gain a wide audience in the university community and beyond via a colloquium and a web-based forum. This book and the associated website will both inspire them and feature prominently in their work.” He was awarded 10 books.
