Impact Narrative

Briony writes, “I am currently undertaking PhD studies in the School of Natural and Built Environments at the University of South Australia (UniSA). My research involves the use of remote sensing to help inform, monitor and evaluate the environment and environmental policies. A big factor in environmental issues and policies, from the local to the global perspective, is the perceived conflict between humans and the environment. Many think that if we can just learn to make things and do things in a more sustainable manner, then everything will be ok with the world. I believe however, that if we, as a species, continue to grow and expand at the current rate, the Earth and all its inhabitants will will be doomed regardless of our progress in sustainability. This does not mean we should give up our aim to be more sustainable; it is an important step in the right the direction, but it will only be effective if we also consider the bigger picture of overpopulation.

UniSA’s Mawson Lakes campus, is situated just North of Adelaide in South Australia. Along side Environmental Studies, many other disciplines are taught here including engineering, planning, sciences, earth sciences and information technology. Education and understanding is the best way to enact change within the community and social conscience. As such, I would like to see this book displayed for viewing by all students and members of the public in the library at this campus and at our two city based campuses, in the Adelaide CBD.”
