Rosie is with Rydon Community College. Here is her proposal for OVER:
“As a rights respecting school, we have a proactive approach to addressing development issues through the school curriculum, paying particular attention to the Millennium Development Goals and the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child. These are particularly addressed through a dynamic and interactive approach to teaching and learning within the Geography curriculum.
The books would be used to complement other teaching materials on 21st Century Challenges (RGS) for all three year groups of this 10 – 13 intermediate school of 450 pupils. The school is developing the wide use of social media to reach out to parents in the community. Our recent trip to Iceland has widened the readership of our Twitter activity @rydonccgeog. Most recent evidence of supporting global issues includes the WWF Save Our Forests Campaign, in which two Rydon Y6 pupils won the SE regional awards in the WWF ‘I Love Amazon Schools’ poster competition (see our local MPs website www.nickherbert.com).
The Geography department places a huge emphasis on raising awareness of global issues though photography and visual images. We have found that this a way to transform the delivery of the curriculum and to promote avenues for questioning and follow up.”
There are many ways to participate! Together, we can raise awareness and bring about change.
