Sharon’s proposal for OVER:
“I am in the process of lodging a proposal for an art exhibition to be held next year in Umbrella Studio Contemporary Art Gallery. The exhibition will be called Significant Others, the concept being the significant impact nature has on human well-being, and the need to value and protect the natural world, in particular creatures other than ourselves. The media will be sculptural as well as paintings in oil and acrylic. As part of this proposal, I would like to be able to include your organization as sponsor, through your generous donation of copies of your book, and possibly use of some of your images in a video display.
After seeing the photo of Mexico City on Facebook, I initially thought to contact you and ask for permission to use images from your book for a video display as I thought that rotating these images on a screen during the exhibition, showing the negative impact humanity is having on the natural world, would complement the message in an incredibly powerful way. Then I saw that you were offering free copies of the book for creative use. Having copies of the book for people to view, as well and giving them away (possibly through some sort of competition or quiz which would test people’s knowledge of overpopulation and species extinction, would further enhance the message, as well as being an excellent vehicle to encourage people to think more deeply about the issues.
The print media in the city of Townsville often covers art exhibitions at this gallery, and the Umbrella Studio itself has a large network and strong links to the Conversation Society and hosts exhibitions throughout the year to raise funds for this organization, so there is already a connection to people who are concerned about conservation issues and who may not as yet be aware of your organization. Press coverage and advertising reaches a wider audience, and would help to increase public awareness.
Documenting the exhibition with video and posting it on Vimeo, and youtube are an obvious must, as well as twitter updates and facebook postings.”
There are many ways to participate! Together, we can raise awareness and bring about change.
