Lyon’s proposal for OVER:
“I will be creating a club, the Philosophy Club, next year at my school. In it, we will explore various philosophic issues on numerous topics. Environmentalism, Deep Ecology, biocentrism (ethics), and the issue of resource extraction over environmental regulation will be issues that I hope to explore that these books could provide a meaningful basis. Viewing these pictures, we can converse on why might these situations happen and how they can continue to happen, etc.
This book can easily be tied to contemporary global economic trends, mainly that of neoliberalism in the periphery countries and how multinational corporations and international financial systems such as the World Bank and International Monetary Fund put developing countries in a precarious economic situation where they have to sacrifice the sanctity of their land and peoples’ lives in order to pay off interest debt. This book, therefore, could help club members recognize how this issue does not exist as a singular concept but as a plural one (that it is connected to other pertinent global issues.) This would make this issue far more important in the minds of students as they will be able to relate and understand how this issue is involved in a causal link of actions from many starting points.
In addition to my Philosophy Club, I will also be taking AP Environmental Science, to which I hope if I get some books, I could share it with students in that class so that we can all gain a better understanding of this issue. It is not enough that we allow the mainstream media to cover these issues (or lack of coverage, it seems), people need to see pictures to truly recognize the ramifications of centuries of bad stewardship. This book would be the perfect supplemental reading resource for students because it will only emphasize the importance of the environment in our lives.”
There are many ways to participate! Together, we can raise awareness and bring about change.
