Impact Narrative

Tash’s proposal for OVER:

“I am a HS teacher of Global Issues with Grade 9 and 10 students. We discuss and have done units on Population growth and its impacts on the world. I also co-run the GAIN (Global Awareness and Issues network) club/ student group at ICS with my friend and colleague Chris McBride (who is a member of the African Schools Service Learning Committee). We would have students commit to a project – which as they are students we would have them investigate, plan, and action – beyond this we would have them demonstrate this at the annual GISS (Global Issues Service Summit) conference which International schools across Africa participate in and students lead workshops and spread ideas across other schools. This year we took a project on reusable sanitary pads and our students led a hands on ‘making’ workshop and gave start-up kits all other schools in attendance on how to take the project back to their school and initiate it. Again we will plan to do this in Tanzania when we attend the 2016 GISS conference with over 20 other International and local schools involved – students sharing Global Issues solutions with other students – this could be one of the projects they plan?! In 2017 our school will host the GISS conference and Chris and I will be the Leaders of this event – we have to select a theme for the conference again this is an option to focus on for the conference. In addition my position at the school is the CAS Coordinator – CAS – Creativity, Action & Service – I am in charge of the IB students program and pointing them in the right direction of projects they can do. We already have had a group start up this year called Sustainability for Students who are planting a tree for every student who has been on an International School trip this year in an attempt to off set their carbon emissions but they need more ideas on how to spread this information into the community. These students are amongst some of the biggest leaders of tomorrow and also the biggest consumers – education needs to start with them. With their Global Awareness and power they can spread the right information and be better global citizens.”
